10 Famous People Who Are or Were Blind in One Eye

Here’s a list of 10 famous people (in alphabetical order by last name) who couldn’t see out of one eye:

  • Jefferson Davis, politician. Was the first and only president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Lost vision in his left eye in 1858 as result of inflammation.
  • Sammy Davis, Jr., musician and actor. Part of the legendary “Rat Pack” of the 1950s and 1960s. Lost his left eye in a car accident in his late 20s.
  • Johnny Depp, actor. Known for many roles, including the 1980s TV series 21 Jump Street and later the role of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Has been legally blind in his left eye since birth.
  • Peter Falk, actor. Most famous for playing in the TV series Columbo, and also as the grandfather in the movie The Princess Bride. He had his right eye surgically removed when he was three and lived with a glass eye.
  • Rex Harrison, actor. Won an Oscar for Best Actor for the 1964 film version of My Fair Lady and played the title role in the 1967 hit Doctor Dolittle. Lost most of the sight in his left eye after contracting measles as a child.
  • Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. Detatched his left retina during a boxing match while president. He was 50 years old. (And still boxing, apparently. As president.)
  • Dick Vitale, sportscaster. A well-known basketball sportscaster for ESPN. Lost sight in his left eye after a pencil mishap in kindergarten.
  • Fetty Wap, hip-hop artist. Billboard winner and Grammy nominated rapper. Born with glaucoma in both eyes, doctors were unable to save his left one. He wears a prosthesis.
  • Alice Walker, novelist and poet. Most famous for the novel The Color Purple. Lost her right eye as a child when she was shot with a BB gun by one of her brothers. She credits the experience for motivating her to take up writing.
  • Thom Yorke, musician. Frontman for the band Radiohead. Born with a paralyzed left eye, he underwent several childhood operations, including one at age six that left him with a drooping eyelid.

  1. Thank you for this article. Dale Chihuly also works with one eye, due to an auto accident. He’s famous for his amazing blown glass works of art at the Tacoma Museum of Glass, and he also has an exhibit at Seattle Center. Some of his works have been featured at the Seattle Art Museum.
